It can be difficult to talk about mental health issues with children, particularly because in the early years, it’s hard to tell what is developmentally normal, childish petulance versus what might be the early precursor of a mental health disorder. But children’s mental health is as important a consideration as adults’; they, too, are affected by the stresses of competitive environments, busy schedules, social pressures, and a desire to be heard and understood.
The best thing that parents can do is remain communicative and open-minded so as to be able to support and validate the feelings and emotions of a child who is struggling. It’s also important to seek help from a trained therapist or doctor when you feel you can’t handle your child’s issues; early intervention and the support of someone who may be able to identify a more serious mental health condition can be transformative.
