The Elephanta Caves offer a great mix of adventure and history for families. A short boat ride across the bay from the Gateway of India, and a long trek uphill, the caves are a great day trip for outdoorsy youngsters interested in art, history, culture, or religion – or just running around on some old rocks. Trinket stalls line the entrance, so be prepared to buy a souvenir or two. And a couple of open-air restaurants provide shady spots to take a break from touring. Young kids won’t like the steep stairs leading to the site’s entrance, so this is probably a day trip that’s best for kids over 5. Just be sure to protect your snacks from the hungry – and fearless – monkeys.
